In 1945, French women officially voted for the first time, almost 100 years after the introduction of "universal" suffrage. Why did they have to wait so long?
Anne-Sarah Bouglé-Moalic, the guest speaker, will retrace the long struggle of the suffragists before looking at what has happened since: in 80 years, how far have women progressed in politics?
Anne-Sarah Bouglé-Moalic is a historian specialising in women's rights. She has worked on French women's right to vote and has published several works on the subject, including "La Marche des Citoyennes", published by Le Cerf (2021).
Her book will be available for signing and sale at the end of the lecture, in the presence of the Laval bookshop M'Lire.
Admission is free, subject to availability.
This event is organised as part of the exhibition "Les femmes vont voter, octobre 1944 - octobre 1945" (Women go to the polls, October 1944 - October 1945) at the Archives départementales de la Mayenne in Laval from 19 January to 25 April.
