Zodiac, the elusive serial killer who rampaged through the San Francisco area in the late 60s and spread terror, was America's Jack the Ripper. Prodigious in cryptic messages, he sowed clues like white stones, and took a malicious pleasure in taunting the press and police. He took credit for some thirty murders, but caused much collateral damage among those who hunted him down in vain.
Robert Graysmith, a shy young newspaper cartoonist, had neither the experience nor the connections of his brilliant colleague Paul Avery, a crime reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle. An outsider to the investigation, he had no access to the data and evidence available to the charismatic Inspector David Toschi and his meticulous partner, Inspector William Armstrong. The Zodiac would nonetheless become the case of his life, to which he would devote ten years of effort and two books of dizzying accuracy...
