Kumiko, paraplegic since childhood, lives with her grandmother, who over-protects her from the outside world. She rarely goes out and has created her own world, helped by reading, her fascination for the sea and her overflowing imagination. She asks to be called Josée, after a young heroine in a novel by Sagan. Tsuneo, a brilliant student of marine biology, would like to continue his studies in Mexico where he can live his dream of diving in tropical waters. To do this he needs money, so he looks for odd jobs. One evening, he literally runs into Josée and saves her from a horrible fall. Following this accidental encounter, Josée's grandmother hires Tsuneo as a carer. Josée turns out to be bossy and stubborn, but Tsuneo is extremely patient. They get to know each other and even like each other. One day, he takes Josée to the sea...
