Nicaragua, today. Maria, aged 11, lives with her mother Lilibeth on the edge of a rubbish dump. Their future depends on selling a litter of pedigree puppies to a local thug. When the deal falls through, Lilibeth has to go into town and drops Maria off at a recycling centre where she has to stay and work. But days go by and she doesn't come back. Maria feels lost, confused and angry. One night, Maria meets Tadeo, an imaginative new friend who is determined to help her find her mother.
Nicaraguan cinema is rare and precious. Here, it is the relationship between this mother and her daughter that takes centre stage. Surreal images highlight the depth of the film, and the director has succeeded in immersing us in this environment of extreme poverty with great sensitivity. A fine example of the dreamlike realism so dear to Latin American cinema. A must-see. - Atmosphères 53
