Florence Nightingale was a 19th-century English mathematician and nurse who put statistics to work for everyone. A performance by the company Terraquée, followed by a round-table discussion with a mathematics historian and nursing staff from Laval.
At 8pm, Laval's heritage department will present a short history of the lycée and its past as a supplementary hospital during the First World War.
Then at 8.30pm, the Terraquée company will present its show "Nightingale, la dame à la crête de coq": thanks to her keen observations and knowledge of medicine and mathematics, Florence Nigthingale discovered how to improve hygiene conditions to prevent a large number of deaths in hospitals. She also created diagrams representing numerical data to help communicate with people unfamiliar with this field. This scientist made a major contribution to mathematics, but also helped to define the foundations of the nursing profession. The aim of this show is to introduce you to this scientist and highlight her contributions to the service of patients and the general public. Even today, doctors and nurses use the safety methods developed by Florence Nightingale.
After the performance, there will be a discussion with Anne Boyé, a doctor in the history of mathematics, nursing staff from Laval hospital and the cast and crew of the show.
