In a Spanish colony in 18th-century Latin America, the civil servant Don Diego de Zama waits desperately for a safe-conduct from the Viceroy that will finally allow him to be reunited with his family. In the meantime, all his privileges as a white man are slipping away: the women denounce his voyeurism or refuse his advances, the indigenous men despise him, his compatriots mock him, and the territory over which he thought he reigned turns out to be a mirage. And his relentless pursuit of an elusive bandit with a troop of mercenaries will expose his blindness.
