The Archives départementales de la Mayenne are hosting the Académie du Maine for their monthly conference. The lecture is entitled "Mayenne and Monaco under the same crown. Le duché de Mayenne au temps des Mazarin et Grimaldi" by Cyril Daydé, Director of the Archives départementales de la Mayenne.
In May 2024, Prince Albert II of Monaco visited Maine for the first time. In doing so, he gave full meaning to the courteous title of "Duke of Mayenne", which he has held like all his predecessors for two and a half centuries. With their union on 2 October 1777, Louise d'Aumont, distant heiress of Cardinal Mazarin, and Honoré Grimaldi, the future Prince Honoré IV of Monaco, sealed the alliance between two of the families closest to the French throne. They also sealed the union under the same crown of a bocage duchy and a principality on the Côte d'Azur that had previously been strangers to each other. Through an examination of sources, some of which are little-known or even unpublished, this conference will attempt to retrace the respective histories of these two territories, before, during and after this episode that saw their destinies linked, until the French Revolution reshuffled the cards.
