Journées Européennes des Métiers d'Art

  • Themed tours and outings
  • Fine Art
6 Rue des Béliers, 53000 Laval
Located on the ground floor of an 18th-century house in the heart of Laval's historic centre, the workshop is a place for creation and transmission. Echoing the theme of "Hearts at Work", the aim of the exhibition is to showcase the work of engraving and ceramic craftspeople.
The Atelier de La Table de Marbre is opening its doors for an immersion into the heart of craftsmanship and the transformation of materials. Throughout the opening period, the studio will be open to the public. Visitors will be able to explore the creative spaces, tools and works in progress, and talk directly to two artists. The programme will highlight the process of ceramic sculpture devoted to the figure of Don Quixote. The different stages of creation will be presented: modelling the clay, drying, firing in the studio kiln, glazing and finishing. Regular demonstrations and explanations will be offered throughout the exhibition's opening hours, so that visitors can get a real feel for the techniques used, the physical commitment involved and the time it takes to create a work of art. In dialogue with the volume, intaglio engraving on metal plates will also be presented in all its phases: direct and indirect engraving, preparation of the plates, inking and printing on a 19th-century cast-iron press (Aubert, Paris). The operation of the press will be explained, and prints will be shown to illustrate the various stages in the printing process.
