Dedicated to the Chouannerie and the Revolution, the museum is housed in the family farm where Jean Chouan lived. The house evokes the daily life of these modest peasants, false-farmers and counter-revolutionaries. Visitors are plunged into the heart of this period of Mayenne history.
La Closerie des Poiriers, a typical 18th-century farmhouse in the Mayenne region, will be open to the public from 2.30pm to 7pm on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September 2025, to mark the European Heritage Days. Visitors will be able to explore the dwelling house, which includes the common room, bedroom, stable and home of René COTTEREAU, Jean CHOUAN's brother. In the lodge, which has been converted into a museum, panels recounting the local history of the time provide a wealth of explanations and anecdotes. Outside, you'll also find the well, the oven and the newly renovated clogmaker's lodge. A film retracing the life of Jean COTTEREAU - known as Jean CHOUAN - will also be shown. Volunteers from the Friends of the Museum association will be on hand to guide visitors as they explore the site.
