Description
David Audibert, Doctor of Modern History, takes you back to the 18th century to find out more about the grocer's trade through the case of Joseph Segretain, a drug merchant in Laval.
A little-known profession in the modern era (far removed from the contemporary meaning of small local shops), in the 18th century the grocery trade belonged to the luxury or semi-luxury professions. Working regularly in wealthy shops, grocers played a major role in commercial history, helping to distribute rare and sometimes exotic products within the commercial society of these merchants and assessing their place in urban society.
This talk is based on the speaker's new publication: "Vendre l'exotisme. Epiciers de l'Ouest au XVIIIe siècle", published by Presses Universitaires de Rennes in 2025.
