The Vélo Francette®

Known as the Vélo Francette, this cycle route stretches for 630 kilometres between the D-Day beaches (Calvados) and the port of La Rochelle (Charente-Maritime).

In Mayenne, there is a stunning section of the Vélo Francette. A 105-kilometre route that combines the flattest terrain with the highest level of safety by following the towpath along the River Mayenne.

It’s a real breeze, requiring just a little patience and perseverance.

What you need to know

The towpath along which the Vélo Francette route runs is unpaved. It is best to ride a hybrid or mountain bike rather than a city or racing bike.

If you are travelling with children, opt for stages of less than 40 km. Wearing a helmet is compulsory for children under 12 and strongly recommended for adults. Watch out for the river and oncoming cyclists… For young children, a bike trailer or a bike with a tow bar is very handy.

Throughout the route, clearly visible signage tells you how many kilometres remain to the finish.

If you’re planning to return to your starting point by train, there’s only one station on the Mayenne section – Laval – otherwise you’ll need to cycle as far as Angers.
