Description

Two days of discovering English and Irish country dancing, open to everyone, from beginners to experienced dancers.
The contra dance is a figure dance that has enjoyed great popularity throughout Europe and even beyond, from the 17th century to the present day, as it is still danced at traditional balls. The steps can be very simple, making it accessible to beginners. Its sociable nature does the rest – once you’ve had a go, you’ll want to do it again! Programme: English contra dances from the 18th to the 20th century, taken from Playford’s collections or created later: choreography, steps, style, and the fluidity of sequences and movements.   Ceili dances (Irish ballroom dancing). These Irish contra dances date from the 18th and 19th centuries. They were reconstructed in the 20th century and are danced to the rhythms of the reel, jig, hornpipe and even the polka. They incorporate a few specific steps.
