Fancy an authentic and inspiring getaway in Mayenne? Step inside the Château de Craon, a magnificent private residence that is still lived in.
Passed down from generation to generation for two centuries, this 18th-century architectural gem is today the result of the daily efforts of a family of enthusiasts who devote themselves body and soul to preserving and bringing this exceptional heritage to life.
By visiting the estate, you’re playing a direct part in safeguarding this living history!
A 1½-hour stroll through history and nature
Wander along 6 kilometres of paths lined with centuries-old trees and running alongside the River Oudon. The estate unfolds through three unique landscaped areas:
- The French garden: Perfectly symmetrical around the château, it makes use of reflecting pools to mirror the architecture and light in an extraordinary way.
- The English-style park: Laid out in 1830, it is home to numerous plant species and offers idyllic views stretching to the very edges of the estate.
- The period kitchen garden: Organised into symmetrical squares with espaliered trees and 19th-century greenhouses. Its produce is turned into homemade jams served to guests, and its famous pumpkins are shared out at the traditional autumn festival (on the third Sunday in October).
